Transport Upgrade Creating a New Commuter Suburb
A bus rapid transit extension along US-54 will turn farmland west of Maize Road into housing and offices for downtown workers.
How we reported this

The Sedgwick County Commission approved a $62 million bus rapid transit extension along US-54 on Monday that will link downtown Wichita to a 1,200-acre parcel west of Maize Road by late 2028.
The project arrives as central Wichita home prices have climbed 14 percent since 2024, pushing buyers outward while downtown employment at companies such as Cargill and Koch Industries continues to grow. City planners say the line will cut commute times from the new area to Old Town from 35 minutes in heavy traffic to 18 minutes on dedicated lanes.
Local detail centers on two established anchors. The route will stop at the existing Wichita Transit hub on Douglas Avenue before continuing west past the Delano neighborhood revitalization zone, where the city has already spent $8 million on streetscape improvements. Developers have optioned 340 acres immediately south of the future 29th Street North station for 1,800 single-family lots and 420 apartments.
Market Data and Pricing
Current listings in the adjacent Ridgewood neighborhood show median sale prices at $287,000, according to the Wichita Area Association of Realtors June report. The new subdivision is projected to open lots at $95,000 to $130,000, with finished homes starting at $315,000. Sedgwick County records show building permits in the Maize Road corridor rose 27 percent in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year.
Next Steps for Buyers and Builders
Interested buyers should contact the Sedgwick County Planning Department at its 525 N Main Street office to review preliminary plats scheduled for public hearing in September. Builders are already submitting site plans to the Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission for the first 450 units, with construction expected to break ground once the transit right-of-way is finalized in early 2027.
